RIFT’s 90s Season at STYX

RIFT are celebrating and reflecting on the 90s with a season of work re-examining plays which are fast cementing themselves into classics 25 years on. They have commissioned the freshest theatre talent of 2017 to take on plays which were being lauded over and chastised when they were at nursery school. These plays defined a generation of theatre writing in a time before broadband; a time of scrunchies, alcopops, opal fruits and in-yer-face, a period of turmoil, hope and hopelessness.

Six weeks of theatre, screenings, talks and parties dedicated to the 90s.

BLASTED by Sarah Kane

Directed by Alastair Pidsley
28 Feb – 11 Mar (exc. 5 Mar)

A play that is invaded by and invades our domestic, everyday lives. Ian and Cate — having previously been in a relationship — are meeting up again after time apart. What follows demonstrates how we as human beings interact with one another; how we relate to and respond to the actions of those around us.

NORMAL by Anthony Neilson

Directed by Emma Baggott
14 – 25 Mar (exc. 19)

A semi-fictional account of a man who terrorised Germany in 1929. Neilson’s play echoes uncannily with today: an impending doom hanging over Europe; an economic climate not unlike our own; society in flux; liberalism clinging on for dear life and the rise of right wing politics. Normal interrogates how society constructs behavior and how we are treated if we deviate from social norms.

THE SKRIKER by Caryl Churchill

Devised by GRUFF Theatre
29 Mar – 1 Apr & 6 – 8 Apr

An ancient, damaged shapeshifter known as the Skriker torments two women’s lives. She seduces and manipulates them, offering an escape from their shattered world, tempting them through time and space from below. A relevant and grotesque take on human nature and the story of our own existence, reimagined by GRUFF Theatre in their uncompromising and direct style.

All shows start at 7.30pm
